“Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” – Proverbs 17:28
The path to wisdom is not so hidden after all; nor is understanding so difficult to attain.
Silence is the best answer for a fool.
We grew up knowing and applying this, at least the few wise ones among us.
But even the snubbed fool is admitted into the circle of the discerning the moment the place of silence in certain situations and conversations is understood and applied to his or her benefit.
Verse 7 of the same chapter says, “Excellent speech is not becoming to a fool,…”, so why not play safe and hold your tongue, especially in exalted gatherings or over matters way beyond your understanding?
Bear in mind that “speaking comes by nature, silence by understanding”, therefore, “open your mouth only if what you are going to say is more beautiful than silence”.
By this shall a fool be made wise,
Stay blessed.
