“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise” – Ephesians 6:2
While God knew you before you were fashioned in the womb, they knew you from conception even till birth.
While God assumes the role of your Creator, these are your assigned guardians on the earth.
Your Maker may remain invisible to you all through your earthly sojourn, but these caregivers you behold with your naked eyes until the way of the earth takes dominion.
Call them whatever name you may choose, your father and mother they are regarded as by the scriptures.
Ironically, and by biblical standards, either or both of them do not necessarily have to be your biological parents.
But by the role and functions played by certain individuals in your life, this commandment is activated.
Like covenants, like this commandment with promise.
The benefits or consequences are only realizable when your part is played, for good or otherwise.
Respect and honour your father and mother figures and God’s accompanying promises are yours for keeps.
Disdain and dishonour these and the consequences are just as dire as dishonouring your Creator.
What promise or consequence are we talking about here, you may ask?
Are the pages of the scriptures not fraught with these?
“That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”, says the next verse of this chapter, among several other scriptures, for benefit sake.
And for a consequence, “‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’…”, Deuteronomy 27:16 (ESV), says.
No complications but only by the engagement of instincts and common sense is this matter settled.
Now you have heard and now you know.
Then comes your undiluted obedience in honour of the Lawgiver.
Remain blessed.
